Let's Face It, Being a Parent Is Messy, AND Traveling as a Parent is TOO!

As a mother of three rowdy boys, no one knows this better than I do. No matter how much effort I put into crafting the perfect birthday party, day out, or just dinner, for goodness' sake, it never goes as planned. I am notorious for crying on my own birthday because, ideally, that should be the day your son doesn't headbutt the other into the table, or another doesn't puke in your hand, or two brothers don't roughhouse enough to break a glass lantern in a store (yes, all those things have caused me to cry on my birthday).

The point is, despite how picture-perfect the Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok photos may look, there are a whole lot of down moments and frustrations as a parent—especially when traveling with kids.

After years of traveling coast-to-coast with infants, toddlers, and now teenagers, here’s what I’ve found: my husband is the perfect blend of optimism to my anxiety. No, I’m not an "Inside Out 2" character, and my husband isn’t perfect, but we balance each other out at just the right moments.

Like the time I was freaking out about our cottage on Puget Sound. The sloped floors were quirky at best, and there were no screens in the windows, which happened to be just a foot off the ground (hello, nightmare fuel for a parent of a two-year-old). My panic was real. But my husband’s excitement about the charm of the place, paired with his perfectly timed shout about a seal swimming right outside our window, was enough to bring my heart rate and blood pressure back down to normal. In that moment, I was able to see the amazing opportunities all around us.

It’s moments like these that remind me that parenthood and travel—though messy, unpredictable, and downright stressful at times—are also full of unexpected magic. Sure, things don’t always go according to plan, but sometimes the best memories are made when they don’t..
